Evoke Me
Evoke Me is an ongoing project that aims to photograph and document the contemporary shoegaze scene using experimental techniques grounded within concert photography. These images utilize ICM (Intentional Camera Movement) to create an impressionistic look that replicates the visual imagery of shoegaze while exploring the creation and meaning of texture.
This is a long term body of work meant to document the contemporary shoegaze and dream pop scenes, encompassing up-and-coming musicians alongside genre monoliths. This project aims to encapsulate the shoegaze scene across all eras and nationalities and across all styles and executions.
Evoke Me is primarily composed of experimental portraiture documenting the shoegaze’s key figures, transnational presence, and the genres synesthetic listening experience. Experimental images aim to visually distill the unique sound of each musician/band. Texture created by ICM is meant to communicate the textural palette of the music performed; Images of musicians with a “dreamier” sound explore softer and more fluid styles of abstraction, while “noisier” musicians may explore saturated colors and angular layering. The presence of each performer is meant to appear imposing, dreamlike, and powerful -- referencing their status as artistic figureheads and architects of sound.
